As you know it has been reported that West Nile is in Spring Creek and has not only infected birds but humans have been infected as well.
Below are a few links that will help you the property owner with the necessary knowledge needed for the management of mosquitoes and for the safety of you and your family.
http://www-rci.rutgers.edu/~insects/gamb2.htm Gambusia affinis effectiveness in New Jersey Mosquito Control— A fact sheet from Rutgers University on the Mosquito Fish—a bio-control tool that we should be using here in Nevada. Certain strains of these tiny guppy-sized fish are hardy enough to survive our winters and be ready to consume mosquito larvae when spring arrives.
http://www.adapcoinc.com/home.php Website for Adapco, a company that specializes in mosquito control tools and materials. I’ll bring several Adapco handouts to tomorrow’s meeting just to give you some idea of what’s available.
http://www.adapcoinc.com/larvicides.php Adapco’s LARVICIDE page— all the products they have to control mosquito larvae and black fly larvae. Larvicides are by far much safer and environmentally friendly than ADULTICIDES; it is also the very best way to limit the spread of vector-borne diseases, e.g., West Nile Virus, St. Louis Encephalitis, and Western Equine Encephalitis—all of which we have here in the Elko area. If the mosquitoes are controlled as larvae, they can’t infect anyone as adults.
http://www.adapcoinc.com/adulticides.php Adapco’s ADULTICIDE page— all the products they have to control mosquitoes as adults. These products are used in the event that the mosquitoes were not controlled as larvae.
There is a great deal more information available on-line. I am also connected with a number of colleagues here in Nevada and in other states who are bona-fide mosquito and vector-borne disease experts. They are more than willing to help us put together a program and/or sort out the needs of Spring Creek. My wife and I are Spring Creek Residents since 2005 and can report that “skeeters’ are quite a problem even at a considerable distance from the Marina.
Please feel free to contact me at any time if you need information, handouts, need to solve a problem, or wish to develop a strategy. I’ll do everything in my power to help you and the Association find a good solution.
